This semester, RTA has introduced AI-assisted marking for assessments.

For those familiar with the CA marking process, it often feels like a "black box."

  • Sometimes, you only receive an overall score without knowing exactly where marks were lost.

  • Even when question-by-question marks are provided, it can still be unclear why certain marks were deducted.

  • After reading the feedback, many students are left wondering how they can improve for future assessments.

The introduction of AI is not simply about improving marking efficiency.

More importantly, it aims to provide more personalised and actionable feedback, helping students better understand:

  • Where they made mistakes;

  • Why marks were lost;

  • How they can improve their responses;

  • Which skills and competencies require further development.

According to CA ANZ:

“AI-assisted marking provides timely, personalised assessment feedback, helping you identify strengths and areas for development more quickly.”

In other words, the goal is to help students gain clearer insights into their performance and accelerate their learning and improvement.

It is also important to note that CA ANZ has emphasised that AI is being used as an assistive tool only.

✅ AI supports the marking process.

✅ Final assessment decisions remain subject to human review and oversight.

This means assessment outcomes are not determined solely by AI.

At present, RTA is the first subject to adopt AI-assisted marking. It will be interesting to see whether this approach is expanded to other CA subjects in the future.

As this is the first semester that AI-assisted marking has been formally implemented within the CA program, the effectiveness of the initiative remains to be seen.

We look forward to observing how it impacts the student experience and learning outcomes over the coming semesters.
